The sport of dragonboat racing has it's origins in China over 1000 years ago.Over the past 20 years has become one of the world's most colourful and fastest growing team sports. Dragonboating is a fun, social and competitive team sport that involves a 48 foot, 300Kg boat, 20 paddlers, a drummer, and a stern racing at 250, 500 and sometimes 2000 metre courses. The goal of teams is to compete in various dragonboat festivals. There are a number of festivals to choose from including:including Victoria Super Sprints(May), Portland (June), Vancouver/Alcan (June), Richmond (July), Vancouver Island Championships and Victoria (August), and Kelowna and SanFrancisco (September). There are others as well, in Vernon, Penticton and Calgary
Teams start their practices in early March and finish the season either after the Victoria or Kelowna festivals. The dragonboat program offers several different teams with different goals and commitment levels.

Club Crews
-
Club Crew teams are open to anyone of all ages and the majority of the dragonboat paddlers at VCKC are members of one of our club crew teams. In 2007 VCKC currently had 6 teams in action.
Paddlers wishing to be placed on a club crew team undergo a selection process to match their season's goals with a team of similarly minded paddlers. VCKC offers three levels of club crews: Competitive, Competitive/Recreational, and Recreational. Club teams start open practices in March and are placed onto teams in April. Different club teams may also mix to attend festivals and all club crew teams participate in the Victoria Dragonboat Festival in mid-August. Club crews are open to anyone with a season or more of dragonboat racing experience or those in responsible shape.
Check our crew web locations, Ageless Warriors , Gung Ho, LocoMotion and St'Keya for further information on their activities
