2021 marks the 40 Anniversary of Paddle for the Kids and you don’t want to miss the event. This year’s virtual event will look a little different. The event will be open from March 20 to May 3.  The objective will be to paddle the equivalent distance between Victoria and Port Angeles (return trip) which is approximately 45.18 nautical miles (84 km). Paddlers can participate in either a canoe, kayak, OC1, or SUP or a combination of these. As well, other outdoor activity such as running, walking, hiking or cycling also qualifies! You get to choose your locations, dates and time for each paddle or activity. Any paddle you undertake during this time frame can count whether a leisurely trip on the upper gorge or a day trip elsewhere.

Paddlers will have almost 2 months to complete the distance. Each paddler will maintain a log of their trips, via our new Paddle for the Kids Webpage. The webpage will compile an ongoing tally of all trips and distances, and we'll share this information to all members on our website, in the newsletter and on the VCKC Chat Page so that all members can see the progress and cheer on participants. We encourage participants to send in pictures as well.

As in past years the event is a fundraiser for Easter Seals Camp Shawnigan.

VCKC will host a virtual start and finish via our Zoom platform. This will provide some camaraderie and the opportunity to congratulate our participants as well as for Easter Seals to accept the funds and thank the participants.

All participants are required to bring a face mask and hand sanitizer as these will not be provided. All efforts will be undertaken to ensure appropriate social distancing, however, in the event that less than the 3 meters occur you will need these items. You must have attended the protocol orientation session and signed the waiver regarding the COVID protocol prior to attending the course. If you have not already completed this requirement contact kayak@vckc.ca to arrange a session.

Some aspects of the training will occur via Zoom. Successful registrants will be provided the Zoom information prior to the course. Some aspects of the session will be outside so be sure to dress appropriately. Participants will require appropriate immersion clothing, which will include a wet or dry suit as you will be in the water for the recovery session and the gorge can be cold this time of year. These can be rented from  Sports Net.

If you have your own PFD that would be ideal, however, it you need to borrow one from the Club that can be arranged. You will be required to bring a whistle as these are mandatory when on the water and not currently on club PFD's due to COVID restrictions.

Participants can either use their own boats and safety equipment or reserve a club kayak through the booking coordinator here. Participants will be required to properly clean any equipment that is used at the end of the session.

Due to the current participant restrictions a maximum of 6 registrants will be excepted.

Payment must be received at time of booking your spot or it will not be guaranteed.

Improving your paddling technique helps increase the efficiency of your stroke, allows you to paddle longer and increases your ability to respond to changes in water or weather conditions. The correct paddle length is also important to effectively and efficiently move the kayak in the water.

Dorthea Hoffman has agreed to conduct paddle stroke clinics for members on Saturday mornings. The clinic will give the opportunity for new and experienced paddlers to develop and improve their techniques. If you have your own kayak and paddle it is best to bring them to the clinic. If you require a club kayak contact kayakbookings@vckc.ca

Each clinic will be limited to six (6) paddlers to allow for individual attention. Dorthea will include paddling with the Greenland paddle for interested parties as well.

Clinic are open to any member who has completed the Basic Kayak Course.

Pre registration is required and the cost is $15.

    Hi VCKC Kayakers and Canoeists,

It's time to take a tour of the Inner Harbour on Sunday April 25 2021.  We will follow the shoreline around Macaulay Point, behind Harrison Island to McLaughlin Point where we'll pass the sewage treatment plant as we turn into West Bay. Continuing around West Bay we'll paddle our way past Lime Bay (Spinnaker's Pub) and follow the shoreline to experience the 'kayak bypass' under the Victoria International Marina at the Songhees walkway. We'll stop at a small beach along the Songhees walkway just before Songhees Point for lunch - remember there are no washroom facilities. After the break we will cross to the other shore (Laurel Point Inn) and paddle along past the Coho Ferry dock to the V2V Ferry dock in front of the old wax museum building (now the Bateman Gallery). Here we'll scoot around past the float plane base as we head to the Johnson Street Bridge where we'll swing across to the far shore and follow the coastline back to Songhees Point where we will cross back over to Laurel Point for a paddle past Fisherman's Wharf. At the Coast Guard base we will complete our full-circuit tour of Victoria's inner harbour and make our final crossing over to Berens Island where we will noodle along the coast on our way back to Fleming Beach

If forecast winds are in excess of 7 knots the paddle will be cancelled.  An alternative paddle "Plan B" may be offered to confirmed registrants.

Registration Note:  All registrants will be first put on a waitlist and then notified when they are added to the trip.  Click on "Join Waitlist" to register

An objective of the trip is demonstrating how to paddle safely in the Inner Harbour, following the Port of Victoria traffic rules.  Please familiarize yourself with the restricted areas and "safe crossings" for Victoria Harbour ahead of time.

This trip is open to solo kayakers and tandem canoeists.  Canoe partners need to be members living in the same household

The launch at Fleming Beach has toilets but our planned rest stop does not.

    Paddle Distance approx 12.0 km (6.5nm )

This course is designed to introduce you to the fundamentals of kayaking first on flat water and then applying these skills to in moving water It is suitable for people with little or no previous kayaking experience, who are confident in water and willing to get wet.  The course has theory components that will cover understanding and reading the river in addition to kayak maneuvering skills.  All skills are initially taught on flatwater (non-moving), including rescue techniques. Many of these skills are the building blocks for rolling your kayak, which takes considerable practice to master.  We will spend a little time introducing this skill prior to moving onto class 1 moving water on Day 2 of the moving water course but recommend that you take one of our rolling courses or clinics to further develop this skill.

Navigation charts, course plotting and compass use

Loading and trimming a canoe to handle wind and waves

    Hi VCKC Kayakers and Canoeists,

We're going to be headed to Cole Island in Esquimalt Harbour for a day trip on Saturday November 7 2020.  Our trip starts at the VCKC Clubhouse.  We'll paddle up the Gorge to the Shoreline launch.  Then, we'll strap wheels to our boats and pull them across an easy 1km portage to Portage Park.  We'll do a little exploring around Esquimalt Harbour and then to Cole Island for lunch.  Cole Island has a low dock landing which is friendly for kayakers.  We'll have people to hold your boat if you are unsure about a dock landing.  Cole Island has numerous historic buildings to check out. After lunch we'll head back to Portage Park following the opposite shoreline, revisit the portage, and paddle down the Gorge back to the clubhouse.

Cole Island does not have washroom facilities

Optional wet exit and rescue training to finish off the trip.

Click here to see our route

    Paddle Distance approx 10 km (5.4nm )

    Portage Distance approx 2 km

    Capacity:  Max of 8 boats

Our aim is to have everyone on the water by 10:00 AM

Please arrive at the VCKC clubhouse by 9:30 am.

We anticipate being back to the clubhouse around 2:00 pm

Group 2 (11am start):  Led by David Dorosz

Please arrive at the VCKC clubhouse by 10:30 am.

    Canoe Registration:

All canoeists need to register.   Please indicate your paddle partner's name, if you know.

    What to Bring

Canoe/Kayak Cart:  Every boat will need a kayak/canoe cart.

The club has 3 carts that can be borrowed.  They will be allocated based on the order that people register for the event.  Many club members have carts that can likely be borrowed.

Safety Gear:  Boats must carry the following safety equipment.

    • PDF for each person (worn)
    • whistle
    • bailing device e.g. pump or bailer
    • throw rope
    • painter on both ends (canoeists only)
    • spare paddle (canoeists only)

Lunch:  We'll be stopping for lunch at Cole Island.  There are no toilets (but many bushes)

    What to Wear

This is a nearshore ocean paddle. As a minimum you will need to wear synthetic based clothing such as polypropylene, nylon, or wool. .

Option to practice wet-exits, and rescues:

When was the last time you flipped your kayak or canoe and practiced getting out and then back in?  There will be no better time and conditions to practice this skill than right at the end of our trip, in the area in front of the clubhouse.  This is 100% optional for everyone  There is no pressure at all to participate.   Usually this is fun with a lot of laughs.  Mike will offer to get wet if someone volunteers to rescue him.

    Covid-19 safety

Participants are asked to bring a face mask and hand sanitizer in case either is required.  We will maintain recommended Covid distances at all times during the event
In order to be eligible to participate you will have attended an orientation session on the Covid protocols and signed a waiver.
